October 22, 2025Want to achieve a makeover but don’t have a budget for maintenance? You’ve come to the right place because I’m going to tell you how to do a low-maintenance balayage.
If you choose the right shade and the right foundation, you can achieve a spectacular balayage with a very low maintenance cost. And returning to the salon every four months to touch it up. will be more than enough.
With these ideas that I will share with you here, you will not only save a fortune on maintaining your hair, but you will also save a lot of time.
First, I will tell you what a low-maintenance balayage is for Donny. And then learn which balayage colour you should choose according to the colour of your hair.
How long does the Balayage technique last?
The duration of the effect of balayage highlights lasts on the hair between approximately 10 and 12 weeks. However, this time depends on various factors, such as hair type, care and, above all, the products we use on our hair.
Therefore, below we leave you a series of information for maintaining balayage that will help you make the effect last longer and its effect look much better.
WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST BALAYAGE TO MAINTAIN?
The cheapest balayage to maintain is the one that uses your natural hair colour as a base.
Do you have dark brown or black hair?
That should be the basis of your balayage.
Do you have medium blonde hair?
That should be the base of your balayage.
At this point, you may be wondering what a balayage base is.
When we talk about the base of balayage we are referring to the roots, in the balayage technique 5 to 7 cm are left to achieve the worn effect.
If, on the other hand, the base colour of your balayage differs a lot from your natural hair colour, you will have a balayage that will need a lot of maintenance. Every time the hair grows, the balayage will have to be touched up.
BALAYAGE ON BROWN HAIR
If you have brown hair, I would recommend a balayage in honey tones without touching the roots. In this way, the gradient would go from your natural hair colour, brown, to a lighter colour, honey.
This is as long as you start with natural brown hair.
If you do a balayage in honey tones, touching up the lengths once every 4 months will be more than enough.
BALAYAGE ON BLONDE HAIR
Now if your natural hair is blonde, the balayage would have to be done in extra light blonde.
Again, so that the balayage does not need much maintenance, the base of the balayage would be the natural colour of your hair, blonde (8). And then the gradient would go towards an extra-light blonde (10).
Now let’s say you have dark brown or black hair and you want to do a light ash blonde balayage.
Can be done?
Yes of course it can be done. But you will spend a fortune.
Firstly, to achieve ash blonde from such dark hair, you will need at least 3 visits to the salon.
And then, when you have to renew the ashy colour you will have to bleach it again.
So, if you have dark hair, and you want a balayage that doesn’t need much maintenance, I recommend that you choose medium tones, such as brown or light brown.
As you can see, the key to a low-maintenance balayage is to use your natural hair colour as a base.
If, on the other hand, the base of your balayage is not your hair colour, then you will spend a fortune on maintaining it.
IS IT ADVISABLE TO DO BALAYAGE ON GRAY HAIR, OR WILL THE MAINTENANCE COST BE VERY HIGH?
If you have grey hair and you want to hide it with a low-maintenance look, I do not recommend balayage.
Because?
Because as soon as your grey roots grow, you will need to return to the salon to touch up the base of your balayage.
On average, human hair grows about 0.5 inches (1.25 cm) per month. Then you will have to return to the salon every month to hide that centimetre of growth.
If you have grey hair and don’t want to go back to the salon every month, I recommend highlights.
If you have dark hair and you get fine, blonde highlights, you will be able to hide your grey hair very well.
The key to a low-maintenance balayage is not to alter the natural hair, and if it is already dyed, not to go up more than 2 shades.
In other words, the more radical the change is to achieve the balayage you want to achieve, the more expensive the maintenance will be.
